Welcome to Orange Flag Career Services
Are you confused about your career choices? Whether it is picking school subjects, university courses or another career because you feel like you are going nowhere in your job, you have come to the right place for help.
Orange Flag Career Services is here to help you with your career development - the process of managing life, learning and work over the lifespan. Life, learning and work are complex, ever changing entities, so it is necessary to carefully understand the process first and then make an impact to drive your life in the direction you want to go.
To start with, lets define what we mean by "career". Your career is defined as the sequence and variety of roles (paid and unpaid), which you undertake throughout a lifetime. More broadly, career includes life roles, leisure activities, learning and work.
So why do we need career development?
Everyone is unique and has different goals in life. It is important to manage your life roles in order to achieve these goals and get the most out of life. Some people wait until they experience a life changing event (eg. redundancy or end of Yr 12) before they seek career development, while others plan regular check-ups to stay on track and in control. It is similar to looking after your physical health. Some people wait till they are sick to see a doctor, while others will have regular check-ups. Similarly with seeing a dentist, mechanic or even getting house renovations or computer upgrades. Either you have regular maintenance or you wait till there is a problem and you get repairs done.

I'm confused - where do I start?
Gaining an understanding of yourself is a great place to start when considering possible career options. What would make you happy? What fits in with your lifestyle? Ask yourself questions about what you want out of life.
Don't worry if you can't define what makes you happy straight away. Sometimes it takes time to work these things out. For example, you don't know if you like photography until you get a camera and start taking photos. There are a number of ways to focus your thoughts and we can go through these exercises at your first career development session.
